Many people who visit New York City for the first time get the feeling they have been there before. There are so many famous landmarks, parks, buildings, museums, and theaters that it can all seem familiar. Watch enough television or see enough movies and these sites can be instantly recognizable. Even the not so famous parts of the city can bring a feeling of déjà vu.
Over 8-million people live in New York City making it the largest and most densely populated city in the country. The traffic on the streets and sidewalks may seem intimidating at first, but it is this energy that makes the city so exciting to some. Become a part of the city by seeing first hand some of its iconic places.
How much of New York City’s famous sights you can see depends on how much time you have to spend there. There are a few you should definitely not miss.
- When picturing the energy of New York City it would be hard not imagine Times Square in the center of the theater district. You don’t want to miss Time’s Square at night with all the neon lights and the many restaurants and upscale hotels.
- How many times has the Empire State Building appeared on film? It is a must-see in person as well. Visit the 86th floor observation deck or continue to the 102nd floor and the observatory.
- The Statue of Liberty is one of the most visited sights in the Big Apple, so plan ahead and get tickets and line up for the ferry to the park early. From Liberty State Park you can take another ferry and visit Ellis Island that saw the immigration of over 12 million people.
- The 19-building complex at Rockefeller Center is also something worth seeing, especially near Christmas. Inside these wonderful art deco buildings are things like the NBC studios and Radio City Music Hall.
After a few days of being caught up in the hustle and bustle of the city, take some time to escape the chaos and the noise in Central Park. There are lakes, hike and bike paths, and picnic areas to enjoy and an endless variety of events to be found throughout the park.
Take a breather by strolling through the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Take advantage of the tranquility inside beautiful St. Patrick’s Cathedral.
